Unsigned Rock Podcast #15

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

A 1st for the Unsigned Rock Podcast, - last night I was invited to From Motion to Memory’s gig at The Head of Steam, Newcastle. Other bands playing last night were Kill John Connor and Where Heroes Once Stood. Check out the earlier posting for a rough review of the gig. But, I managed to grab 10 minutes with Simon from the band during lunch today to get a quick podcast together and a couple of the tracks recorded live last night. Anyone at the gig and coming in from MySpace, leave some comments to let me know what you thought of the guys!

Tracks included in this podcast:

From Motion to Memory

Newspapers Morgues - live
Track kicks in at 2:39
Excuse Me (Whilst I Excuse Myself) - live
Track kicks in at 11:49
Verbal Driveby - studio version
Track kick in at 24:06

Thanks again to the guys in From Motion to Memory for getting me into the venue, and to Olly, their sound guy, for very quickly plugging cables left, right + center to start recording in literally a few minutes and with no time to check sound levels! Seems like The Des Moines Riot’s gig in Edinburgh is going to be fully hooked up straight into the main mixer already on Friday night (Henry’s Cellar Bar @ 7pm) meaning I should have near-perfect audio. Yeah, I’ll wait for that one to bite me in the ass too :D

From Motion to Memory - Head of Steam, Newcastle - June 27th 2006

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

These guys were one of the first bands out of the north-east of England I played on the Unsigned Rock Podcast, and by complete co-incidence Simon on guitar/synth is the guy taking over my job as network manager in a few days time!

Anyways, I played ‘Verbal Drive-by’ back on show #4 and now that From Motion to Memory have started gigging, the guys sorted out a couple of tickets to their gig at Head of Steam, Newcastle for me.

Considering this was From Motion to Memory’s second gig (the first only being last week) things went pretty well, and I’d guess almost the whole crowd knew them from MySpace. Sequencer’s went a bit out at times, and timing went a bit off too, but that’s about what you’d expect when coming together playing live at first and it’s something that will always get better over time.

Banter during tracks was good, and the set slowed down nicely to my favourite, ‘Verbal Driveby’, in the middle before building back up again to the end. Not a huge fan of the vocals at times as the heavier side of things where the lyrics become incomprehensible unless you’ve seen them written down just isn’t my thing. Everyone’s different, and there’s a stack of people that will disagree with me on that point and say they really like it - Pete is an excellent front-man, so no disrespect meant!

But, overall a decent 25-30 minute set, and I do like the base sound of From Motion to Memory with the synth’s, drums + guitars/bass working very nicely to create music that does make you want to listen to it. I got the whole set recorded, which was a first for me and Olly their sound engineer, and 3/4 tracks should be usable, so I’m hoping to get out a special podcast tomorrow, along with some (probably crappy!) photos.

For anyone at the gig/missed it/wants to have a listen, add the show feed to iTunes to automatically grab the show when it’s online! If you were there, let me know what you thought too!

Having just about survived unlucky number 13 on the last podcast, here we go with the next show! Some awesome tracks from right across the US, with an excellent band from the UK thrown in just so I have at least something local to listen to!

A good mix of hard-hitting rock, acoustic + indie rock, and “bubblegum punk” rock to quote Same Day Service! Let me know what you think, and get in touch with the bands too - say you heard them on the Unsigned Rock Podcast and really liked their music!

Unsigned Rock Podcast #13

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Bringing on some really excellent rock tracks from both sides of the Atlantic in this podcast, along with full details of Jam About 2006 - the all day music festival going on in Durham at the end of July. Also news about me blagging free tickets to the Des Moines Riot gig at Henry’s Cellar Bar in Edinburgh on 30th June!

And sorry to Dreams of Treason for completely messing up the name of their track - I’ve obviously looked at the Des Moines Riot track name :-( The track from Dreams of Treason is ‘Take Me There‘, not ‘Let It Go’. I’ll mention that on the next podcast too for those grabbing the show via iTunes or whatever so won’t read this!

I’ll should be able to announce it all on the next podcast!

After a little break of almost a week, here we go again! First podcast being produced in GarageBand after Kat picked me up one of the new MacBook’s, and everything seems to have gone pretty well! I’ve got some good ideas for future shows around GarageBand, as well as looking at bringing in some more live music ideas!

But, there’s a really nice mix of music in this podcast, mellowing out a bit in the middle, with a really kicking rock track at the end!

500 downloads!

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Well, that’s now hit 500 downloads in what, 3 1/2 weeks on LibSyn? Although stats aren’t my motivation and I’m perfectly happy plodding along recording the podcasts and hoping a few people listen in, there’s a comfortable average of 70 downloads per podcast, with listeners creeping up each show and the previous podcast (#10) running at about 87 downloads!

iTunesThanks to everyone that’s been checking out show, leaving your comments on here, and sending me an e-mail.
